Reduced backwards compatibilty for Euro PS306/03/2007 Sony has announced that fewer old games will be compatible with the European version of the PlayStation 3 than on the American and Japanese releases. The console was supposed to be “backwards compatible” with all PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games. However, the European PS3 is different in design to that of the American and Japanese models, meaning that only a limited number of PS2 games will be able to be used on the new console and those titles will only be announced on the day of the PS3’s launch. In a statement, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) said that backwards compatibility was not a primary concern: “Rather than concentrate on PS2 backwards compatibility, in the future company resources will be increasingly focused on developing new games and entertainment features exclusively for PS3,” The PlayStation 3 will be released in Europe on the 23rd March along with a firmware update which should increase the amount of PS2 compatibility by a small amount. |
