Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP)

The sleek handheld Sony PlayStation Portable or PSP was launched in 2005. Weighing in at only 280 grams, the PSP is unique because it's a handheld console that not only offers game play, but also allows you to watch movies, play music, and store videos and photographs.

Thanks to its memory stick slot you can change the amount of memory available. The 32 Meg memory stick duo comes as standard, but you can use different sizes up to the one or two Gig memory stick to enhance the amount of storage available.

.

As it's made by Sony you have the peace of mind that the PSP is going to be well-made piece of kit, and because it is backed by some of the biggest game manufacturers in the world, the PSP will have one of the best ranges of games available for handheld consoles.

Features of the Sony Playstation Portable include:

  • Video and Music Player

You can use your PSP to download music in MP3, MP4, WAV, or ATRAC3plus music file formats through the Memory Stick Duo. You can also watch movie footage by either using your memory stick to watch UMD or MP4 files, or by buying some of the wide range of movies available on pre-recorded UMD movie disks. A huge range of film companies are involved so major movies will be available on UMD disk for the PSP.

  • UMD Player

The PSP uses a Universal Media Disk (UMD) compatible system which means that you can play a selection of pre-recorded UMD Videos, movies, music, and of course games, on the PlayStation Portable. The UMD is a mini-CD and fits into the PSP disk drive, but you can also transfer files via the memory stick to play compatible files on the PSP.

  • 1GB & 2GB Memory Cards

The PSP uses a Memory Stick Duo to store a range of files. These memory sticks come in a range of sizes from the standard 32 Meg, currently up to 2GB of storage, and this is expected to grow in the future. The Memory Stick Duo allows you to download, store, and transfer a range of MP3, MP4, and UMD movie clips files, to name but a few, and gives total freedom as to how you want to use your PSP.

  • WLAN Switch and Internet access

The WLAN switch gives you two ways to play wireless multiplayer games, Ad Hoc Mode and Infrastructure Mode, so you can play games against other PSP users whenever and wherever you like. With the PSP internet access you can surf the net, browse your favourite sites or download MP3s and a host of other things to be stored on your memory stick duo and used on your PSP.

  • LCD Screen

The Sony PSPs modern and classy 16:9 TFT flat screen gives an incredibly sharp picture which ensures that your games, movies and videos are experienced at the highest quality available for a handheld portable system.

  • Analog Stick

The Sony PlayStation Portable's analog stick means that you can get close to the action thanks to its responsive and immediate control. This function will enhance anyone's enjoyment of the PSP.

  • Classic Playstation Controls

Along with the analog stick, Sony have made sure that if you're familiar with the PS1 or PS2 you'll take to the PSP by making sure that the feel and layout of the controls are familiar. The four-button Triangle, Circle, Square, and X button layout is there along with left, right, up, and down buttons for quick navigation, meaning that the PSP feels similar to PlayStation and PS2 controllers.
