Sony PlayStation 3 (PS3)There have been few events which have built up more excitement in the gaming world than the release of the Sony PlayStation 3. Although the launch in Europe has been delayed to March 2007, the PS3 should be the most powerful and futuristic games console so far, as Sony will be attempting to embrace a whole range of next generation technology to give the PlayStation 3 the edge over the competition. Sony has recently announced that the PS3 will be backwards compatible. Sony was the first company to allow older games to be played on a new system, so you could play your PlayStation 1 games on your PS2. You will be able to play both PS1 and PS2 games on your PS3 to ensure that whole game collections do not become redundant over-night. Sony is one of the companies who have got involved with the Blu-ray Disk Association (BDA), as have Apple, Dell, Hitachi, JVC and Panasonic to name but a few. The Blu-ray disk allows recording, re-writing and playback of High Definition TV and stores a large amount of data thanks to its capability of holding at least 25-50 GB,. This will mean that games can be even more in-depth and the range of extras and features available to the film industry will also be practically limitless. If you want to play DVDs on the system then you will need to buy the right format Blu-ray as opposed to the other new format HD. Sony also boasts the backing of the best gaming developers, ensuring that they will continue to release some of the strongest and most addictive games available on the market to accompany their newest system. Early features confirmed for the Sony PlayStation 3 include:
The PS3 will boast a Cell processor (jointly developed by Sony, IBM and Toshiba) and the RSX graphics processor, co-developed with Nvidia and SCEI. Working together, these will give the PS3 a simply unprecedented amount of processing power. The RSX will be the most sophisticated graphics chip ever built.
Sony raised the bar by allowing you to play your old PS1 games on the PS2. The PS3 will be backwards compatible to allow you to play both PS1, and your old PS2 games on the new PlayStation 3. This is done by using emulators, rather than by the new hardware itself.
Sony has worked with Blu-ray to make sure that its games are made on the Blu-ray disk, which has an unprecedented amount of storage space for a Disk. .As a result, game designers will no longer be limited to what they can put on their games due to issues with storage. The PS3 will also output at a High-Definition compatible rate, which means that with the PS3,and a new HDTV, you will be at the forefront of new entertainment technology.
You can use your Sony PS3 as a CD player to play music CDs, or as a DVD player so that you can watch the latest films. This makes the PS3 a really versatile buy for your living room, and also on the cutting edge as it will use Blu-ray technology and will out-put in HD quality.
The PlayStation's Bluetooth compatability allows up to seven controllers to connect to the console without wires. There is also possible potential for connectivity between the PS3 and PSP via this method. The wireless controllers can be charged up like mobile phones, and will then be ready for action.
A main advantage of the PS3 will be the sheer number of games available for it, as not only will you have all the new PS3 titles, but you will have a plethora of games titles form the PS1 and PS2 to choose from. Whatever type of game you prefer, there is something for you. Games already announced include:
