Nintendo Wii

The Nintendo Wii console was launched in May 2006 ahead of the E3 Games Expo. There is currently no confirmed release date but senior Nintendo Executive Reggie Fils-Aime stated at the launch that the Wii will be available in the final quarter of 2006.

The Wii contains a Power PC CPU (Code-named Broadway) which has been jointly developed by Nintendo and IBM. As yet, there's not much information available about the graphics processor other than it is being developed with ATI. The unit has 512Mb of internal Flash memory with two USB Ports and built-in Wi-Fi capacity.

Measurements for the Nintendo Wii are currently not available, but Nintendo's publicity material describes a unit approximately the size of three stacked DVD cases.

Nintendo Wii - Unorthodox Controller

Nintendo has emphasised the benefits of their motion sensitive controller, with the intention of using it as a means of getting the whole family involved and therefore increasing the audience. Up to four controllers can be connected at once and the Wii Controller uses wireless Bluetooth technology. The Wii Remote is cordless and aims to give you a closer, more intense gaming experience without sacrificing the depth of game play. A Nunchuk controller will also be available.

Nintendo Wii - Media

The console will be able to play double and single layered 12cm discs as well as the 8cm Game Cube Discs.

Nintendo Wii - Internet Access

Even when turned off the Nintendo Wii can communicate with the net, thanks to the WiiConnect24 service. It will update you system and games even when you aren't playing. The system connects to the net with IEEE 802.11b/g Wireless or with a USB 2.0 LAN. The Wii can also communicate wirelessly with the Nintendo DS.

Nintendo Wii Games - Downloads

The Wii will enable you to download classic Nintendo games originally made for Nintendo 64, SNES and NES consoles. There will also be a selection of titles from the Sega Genesis and the Turbo Grafx console. Additionally games will be available from indie developers.
